Greetings,
I just wanted to say that the Envy of the Irish Server is all but retired. I haven't officially retired the server yet, but I will soon. However, it's disconnected and no longer even powered on.
Server Time Line:
10/25/2014 thru 06/10/2020 (i still have db backups, 2 per day for everyday between those dates)
I would like to sincerely thank anyone and everyone who logged into the server, all those who gave me suggestions, and all those who helped me resolve any issues.
When I started the server, I had spent a couple years as a player on a couple servers where character data was 'lost'. I wanted a place where 'data would never be lost', so I thought I would try to start a server. All I knew at the time was SQL Server (had never used MySQL to that point). Before long, I was altering/compiling C++ code, and writing perl scripts (not even knowing what the hell I was doing, lol). Through learning all I could from any source available, and leaning heavy on the documentation/materials made available in this community I was able to get proficient. So long story short, I've learned ALOT from this project/community and for that I am truly grateful.
When Envy started, I was continuing someone's else vision and made choices with that vision in mind. I've built/building a new server, with the newest EQEmu code/architecture and latest database release (as of 6/10 at least). I dont have a 'set in stone' direction of what type of environment I would like to see, but it will not be the same as what Envy was.
With Envy, I had not a freakin clue what I was doing when I was 'developing' the server; with this new server at least now 'I know what I dont know', and somewhat excited to see what can happen now with these skills that I have acquired through this community.
Warm regards,
Osiris - Lord of the Dead
